In 2011, the Nobel prize for Physics was awarded to Saul Perlmutter, Brian P. Schmidt, and Adam G. Riess. They received it for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae. They also proved that this expansion is fuelled by dark energy.
What does that have to do with the rest of us? In a few billion years, the Earth will move out of the Goldilocks zone and will become uninhabitable. So to ensure the survival of our species, we will have to colonize other Earth-like planets. The closest Earth-like planet is 12 light years away. For us to colonize these exoplanets, our technology will have to evolve faster than the dark energy’s push. Thus, science is constantly fighting the dark side to ensure the survival of the human race!
But then again, it looks like the Universe will end in ice. Game over!
